The accident involved multiple vehicles, caused by a big rig crossing into oncoming traffic. While injured individuals received medical attention, Lopez, a father himself, spontaneously comforted the uninjured child. Lopez saw his actions as part of his duty as a first responder, noting that any of his colleagues would have done the same. Sadly, the crash resulted in fatalities, including a mother and daughter. A 6-year-old girl from one vehicle sustained serious injuries, while the 4-year-old girl comforted by Lopez had minor injuries.
