Families with Scandals That Could Be Front-Page News

When I was 14, I got a Facebook message from a man named “Dave.

” He said he was my uncle, but I had never heard of him before. When I asked my parents about him, they looked scared. Every year on my birthday, he would send me a message. When I turned 18, he asked to meet.

I was freaked out when I saw someone who looked exactly like me coming toward me. That’s when I realized Dave was more than just a random person—he told me his real name was “Ricky,” and he was actually my dad.

My mom got pregnant with me, and he went to prison for fraud. Her parents made him sign a paper promising to stay away from me. When he got out, he couldn’t contact me because of the agreement, but now that I’m 18, he wanted to tell me the truth.

It’s been five years, and I’m really close to him. I love him more than the man who raised me, who was always cold and distant. But my mom says she’ll never forgive me.
